Take a winding road through the Atlas Mountains and the Tizi N’Tichka pass for an unforgettable excursion to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech.
Perched on a hill south of Telouet, stronghold of the Glaoui, Ait Ben Haddou reveals itself with its traditional dwellings surrounded by earthen walls. Its striking architecture reflects the pre-Saharan way of life, while this ancient fortress once served as a crucial stopover between Marrakech and the Sahara for trade caravans seeking new lands in southern Africa.
After a guided tour of the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, our driver will take you to Ouarzazate, a medieval city once considered the main commercial crossroads of the region. There, discover the cultural and commercial buzz that once sparked encounters between the peoples of North and South Africa.
Take the opportunity to visit the famous film studios of Ouarzazate and enjoy lunch at a Moroccan restaurant of your choice before returning to Marrakech, with memories to last a lifetime.
The city of Ouarzazate, the capital of the Tafilalt Darâa region, is proudly nicknamed the 'gateway to the desert'. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, particularly to the 7th century, when it was Islamized by Oqba Ibn Nafia, becoming an important hub for trade caravans crossing the Atlas towards southern Africa during the Saadian reign.
The region experienced significant economic and cultural growth due to the influx of traders attracted by the discovery of gold and precious metals in its surroundings.
Today, Ouarzazate remains a must-visit for travelers and tourists eager to explore southern Morocco and its desert, thus serving as a gateway to exciting adventures and enriching cultural discoveries.
Ait Ben Haddou is a remarkable example of a Sub-Saharan village, consisting of several dwellings on the side of a hill, surrounded by a defensive wall. At the top of the village is a granary where residents stored their harvests.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, Ait Ben Haddou has been used as a filming location for many famous movies, including 'The Mummy,' 'The Message,' 'Gladiator,' 'Babel,' and 'Prince of Persia.'
