The city of Ouarzazate, the capital of the Tafilalt Darâa region, is proudly nicknamed the 'gateway to the desert'. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, particularly to the 7th century, when it was Islamized by Oqba Ibn Nafia, becoming an important hub for trade caravans crossing the Atlas towards southern Africa during the Saadian reign.

Ait Ben Haddou is a remarkable example of a Sub-Saharan village, consisting of several dwellings on the side of a hill, surrounded by a defensive wall. At the top of the village is a granary where residents stored their harvests.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, Ait Ben Haddou has been used as a filming location for many famous movies, including 'The Mummy,' 'The Message,' 'Gladiator,' 'Babel,' and 'Prince of Persia.'
